Blended families are already difficult to navigate. When a couple has parenting styles that differ from one another, it can be quite a challenge. What do you do when you and your partner parent differently? How can you make it work? My husband Shawn joins me to talk about our own challenges in this area. We talk about

  • Our parenting styles when we first met
  • Mistakes that we made in the beginning
  • How to be fair but also treat each child as an individual
  • Differences of parenting when custodial or noncustodial
  • What we learned from one another and how you can too
  • The importance of open communication
  • And much more

We all have exes, and many of us are dealing with exes who are difficult and uncooperative. Since there is not much we can do to change who they are or what they act like, we can only focus on ourselves. There are things we can do to make these interactions more pleasant.

  • Work on better communication
  • Treat your relationship with the ex as a business transaction
  • Seek help from your ex's family members or friends
  • Respond without reacting
  • Don't fight back
  • Don't seek revenge
  • Don't use the kids as messengers
  • Don't try to change your ex
  • Find support for yourself
  • Stay consistent

Hurricane Irma came through my state and left her mark. However, Florida will come out stronger after all this. The same can be said with the storms of life. We all go through hard times, but when we can find the gift or lesson in the storm, we can overcome anything.

Also, an interview with Anna DeAcosta, the creator of the fabulous album The Mindful Stepmom, Guided Meditations for Peace and Flow in your Blended Family.

Because of hurricane Irma, there is not a topic this week. My family and I have been preparing for this storm, as it is threatening to hit my state of Florida.

In the meantime, listen to my special song by songfinch, that was created for my bonus children! See the lyrics below!

Sometimes reminiscing

Feels like yesterday to me

When you met 10 years ago

With your dad at Mikkey D's

And since then you've gotten close

Happy she could watch you grow

She could say she loves you both

But then you already know

Already know, no love is lost

From 2 young kids to young adults

The whole time with you has been awesome

Wouldn't trade it for a second

It's a blessing

When she step into the house and see you all

Always know that you can call

Anytime you need to talk

So she can say she proud of both of you

She think your the bomb, bomb, bomb

Glad to be your second mom, mom, mom

Honestly she just gets glad again

Heart so full of love

She had somebody write some raps

To send to Shawnie and to Madison

When you came in my life

That's when it changed for me

And I love you so much

So glad that I could be in your life

Promise you could count on me

But you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Yeah, you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Yeah yeah, you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Now Shawnie is sincere

A good heart that makes you cheer

He loves music, he loves football

Pick a concert he'll appear

And he looks just like his dad

Makes you smile from ear to ear

Your stepmoms your biggest fan

Just in case that wasn't clear

Madison she's super driven

Super strong, in it to win it

A competitive cheerleader

No one's better

When she goes for something

Both got hearts of gold

And their talents all their own

Your stepmom loves how you've grown

And turned the house into a home

Here's her way to say she's proud of you

She think your the bomb, bomb, bomb

Glad to be your second mom, mom, mom

Honestly she just gets glad again

Heart so full of love

She had somebody write some raps

To send to Shawnie and to Madison

When you came in my life

That's when it changed for me

And I love you so much

So glad that I could be in your life

Promise you could count on me

But you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Yeah, you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Yeah yeah, you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

When you came in my life

That's when it changed for me

And I love you so much

So glad that I could be in your life

Promise you could count on me

But you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Yeah, you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Stepparents who have no bio children of their own are commonly called childless stepparents. They deal with issues and emotions that are unique from bio parents and stepparents who are bio parents as well. In this episode, I will discuss those issues, which are

  • Feeling unimportant
  • Feeling like you take a backseat
  • Feeling unqualified or being told that you are
  • Feeling like you're missing out on time and experiences
  • Feeling worried about having a child of your own
  • Feelings of jealousy
  • Feeling like an outsider
  • Feeling like you’re not respected
  • Feelings of anger and resentment

Also I will discuss some ways to help overcome the above issues, which are

  • Acknowledge and accept your feelings
  • Involve yourself
  • Bond with the child
  • Be yourself
  • Communicate your needs and feelings
  • Practice self care
  • Have date nights and alone time
  • Separate your feelings for the child from bio parent
  • Don't take it personal

Deciding whether to live together or apart is a big decision for a blended family. Some blended families need to try it both ways to decide which works best for them. In this episode I outline ten things to consider when making this important decision. Plus I’ll list some pros and cons of both.

  1. The length of your relationship
  2. The quality of your relationship
  3. The ages of your kids
  4. The relationship between the stepkids
  5. How well do you and your partner co parent
  6. How do the kids feel about the situation
  7. What is your value on a stress free and peaceful life
  8. What is the difference in expenses from one home to two
  9. Shared care of living together opposed to caring for children alone
  10. What is your ideal family vision

As an alienated parent and victim of family court corruption, Wendy Perry (formerly Archer) became motivated to bring awareness and education about parental alienation out of the shadows. Her advocacy work has included coordinating and hosting the annual Parental Alienation Awareness Day event in Dallas/Fort Worth Texas and other large events such as the Parental Alienation Symposium drawing attendees from around the world, hosting monthly support group and advocacy meetings, meeting with legislators in Washington DC about family court reform as well as doing TV, radio and magazine interviews to raise awareness and education.  The corruption in Wendy’s family court case was so extreme that it was featured in the documentary Divorce Corp.  Having previously served on the board of directors for PAAO Canada and as a co-founder of PAAO USA; Wendy has most recently co-founded and serves as one of the officers for the non-profit organization PAAO International.

In this interview we discuss

  • The parental alienation awareness organization
  • What is parental alienation
  • What is the difference between parental alienation and parental alienation syndrome
  • Some personal letters from victims of PA
  • Difference between PA and gossip
  • How to help children who are affected by PA
  • What steps to take if this is happening to you or your children
  • How to help support the cause
  • And more

Most divorced couples lack great communication skills, which makes co parenting much harder than it needs to be. Healthy communication with your ex creates a peaceful environment for your children, and also sets a great example for them that they will model when they grow up.

My 15 tips for better communication with your ex are

  1. Never use the kids as a go between
  2. Never argue in front of the kids
  3. Learn to pick and choose your battles
  4. Avoid being sarcastic, disrespectful, and rude
  5. Set boundaries, and stick to them
  6. Don't bring up the past when communicating
  7. Practice empathy
  8. Treat your ex the way you want to be treated
  9. Put your children first
  10. Texting and email should be your chosen method of communication
  11. Choose your words carefully

Our children get enough negativity in the outside world. At home, we need to counteract that by building them up. A healthy self esteem is so important for children to have, and it is our job as parents to help them have a positive self image. We can change their story, and teach them how to change their own. Some ideas to help are

  • Notice when they do something right
  • Tell them you are proud of them
  • Compliment them every day
  • Tell them they are beautiful

It’s hard enough dealing with divorce as it is. When you have an ex who makes it harder by telling stories about you, it can seem unbearable. Especially when it results in your children or other people turning against you. Unfortunately we cannot control others or what they do, but we can learn how to cope, to save our sanity.

One of the issues many stepparents face, is the inability to really love their stepchild. It’s rarely spoken of, as those who feel that way are ashamed to admit it. After tons of emails from listeners who struggle with this, it’s evident that this is an issue that people really need help with. In this show, you’ll learn how to deal with these feelings, how to determine where they are coming from, and how to understand things from your step child's point of view. Plus some tips and ideas to work on that relationship for the benefit of the entire blended family.

Intimacy is an essential part of every relationship. Parents can be so caught up with raising children, that they allow the intimacy to fall away. There are three important elements of intimacy in a romantic relationship, which are sexual, emotional, and physical. All three are important and a couple should learn how to create a balance of all three.

Maintaining a good attitude in a blended family is something that is difficult, but not impossible. Bad attitudes can trickle down to everyone in the family, so it’s very important to learn how to manage our own. We also need to help our children manage their attitudes. There are some way to help you lift yourself up out of a bad state of mind, such as breathing, stopping the negative self talk, or finding something to do that brings you joy. My favorite tool is the emotional scale, a tool I learned from Esther and Jerry Hicks, from the book Ask and it is Given. You find where you fall on the scale at any given moment, and you try to gradually climb higher. Below is the scale for your use.  I’ll also talk about some tips that will help you deal with others who are having bad attitudes around you, so that you can remain peaceful.

  1. Joy/Appreciation/Empowered/Freedom/Love
  2. Passion
  3. Enthusiasm/Eagerness/Happiness
  4. Positive Expectation/Belief
  5. Optimism
  6. Hopefulness
  7. Contentment
  8. Boredom
  9. Pessimism
  10. Frustration/Irritation/Impatience
  11. Overwhelment
  12. Disappointment
  13. Doubt
  14. Worry
  15. Blame
  16. Discouragement
  17. Anger
  18. Revenge
  19. Hatred/Rage
  20. Jealousy
  21. Insecurity/Guilt/Unworthiness
  22. Fear/Grief/Depression/Despair/Powerlessness

Many blended families cause feelings of overwhelm. Not only are blended families more complex, there is usually so much more to do and handle. In addition, many of the challenges blended families face add to the overwhelm. Although these feelings are magnified during the holiday season, they really can carry on all year long. My top ten tips to deal with overwhelm are

  1. Get in the present moment
  2. Put it all down on paper
  3. Only handle what you can
  4. Meditate
  5. Learn to say no
  6. Tame your inner perfectionist
  7. Let go of control
  8. Take a break
  9. Do some breathing exercises
  1.     Quit judging yourself
