Sometimes we forget to consider the feelings of other people. We make assumptions about what they think, and why they act the way they do. We tear people down because we think our way is better. We judge and criticize. These behaviors aren’t going to help you or your blended family.

Straying from the regular format, this show is on a more personal note.

I open up about some of my own struggles this Thanksgiving. We also talk about some of our activity in the group. I answer a listener question about the holiday season, and then talk about how to make the holidays work. Not my usual but I hope that you can take something from it!

Many children suffer from low self esteem. As parents, it is our job to recognize these signs, and help our kids develop a better sense of self worth. My ten ways to help are

  1. Give positive reinforcement
  2. Compliment them often
  3. Allow them choices
  4. Put them in a sport or hobby
  5. Give them responsibilities
  6. Help them set goals
  7. Work on your own self esteem issues
  8. Help them with their self dialogue
  9. Teach them about mistakes
  10. Show unconditional love

And a few things NOT to do are

  • Do NOT do everything for them
  • Do NOT compare them to others
  • Do NOT name call

A great conversation with Carrie Ellis-Berg, who has been an elementary school teacher for ten years. Together as a blended family, she and her husband have four children. After realizing the need for children’s books on blending, she felt called to share fun and exciting stories that would help parents and children learn, grow, and adapt in their new family structure. She hopes that her stories will foster and strengthen relationships within the home.

We talk about

  • Her personal story
  • What prompted her to do this work
  • What the books are about
  • Her own positive and negative experiences in her own blended family

And much more!

In life, there are givers and takers. When we deal with takers, we often feel like they drain our energy. We feel frustrated with their lack of concern for our own needs and wants. Sometimes takers naturally gravitate towards us because we are givers. What should you do if you are dealing with a taker in your life, or in your blended family?

Setbacks are a part of life, but when they affect our blended family, they can feel insurmountable. This week, I have 5 tips to help you overcome setbacks with ease.

  1. Accept and acknowledge the issue
  2. Dont place blame
  3. Find your strength
  4. Give it time
  5. Find what you can learn from the experience

Also enjoy some motivational quotes on overcoming setbacks!

It doesn’t get easier you just get stronger

I don’t pay attention to the world ending. It has ended many times and began again in the morning

One small crack does not mean you’re broken, it means you were put to the test and you did not fall apart

It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light

Go as long as you can, and then take another step.

Oftentimes, people can make us uncomfortable when it comes to their reactions to our blended families. Strangers can approach us with questions or stares. Simple outings to a park or restaurant can prompt reactions from others. Other times, an ex or even in laws can make us feel uncomfortable too. Some of this just comes with being part of a blended family, but we still need to know how to manage it, and how to not take it personally.

Dealing with difficult people is a part of life. When a difficult person is part of your blended family, whether a partner, an ex spouse, a child or stepchild, things get more complicated. We cannot always cut that person from our life.  Instead we need to learn methods of how to deal with them, and how to manage our own emotions.

There are things in our lives and blended families that frustrate us. Some of these things we have power to change, but many we do not. There’s no sense in focusing attention to the things we have no control over. In this episode I give you a simple exercise to help you determine what deserves your attention, and what doesn’t.

Create a master list of everything in your life that you you wish you could change or improve.

Then each item gets placed on one of three lists titled:

  1. Things I can change
  2. Things I might be able to change
  3. Things I cannot change

On the first two lists, write action steps for each item. These are things you can do to improve or change the situation. Then you implement those action steps in your life to create change!

The last list, you are going to put away, and drive all of your focus away from it. Focus all of your energy on the positive and on what you have the power to make better!

Dealing with conflict is a life skill that has less to do with resolving the problem, and more to do with how we handle it. Sometimes we can fix things, but when we can’t, we need to know how to cope and live our life. We can’t control others, only ourselves and how we deal with things. Blended families can be full of conflict, especially when dealing with exes. Learn some ways to manage conflict  in this episode.

We all make mistakes in blended families, and it’s important to learn how to grow and move past them. It’s never too late to start over. Some common mistakes we make in our family relationships are

  • Thinking you’re always right
  • Trying to change someone
  • Pleasing others at the expense of yourself
  • Expecting others to know what we want
  • Not managing anger
  • Not giving ourselves time
  • Neglecting relationships
  • Feeling guilty

Three steps for successfully fixing a mistake are

  1. Acknowledge the mistake
  2. Apologize for the mistake
  3. Learn and grow from the mistake

In honor of Mother’s Day, I am joined with Ami Brown, who is Shawn’s ex wife. We talk about all kinds of things, such as

  • Her personal story
  • What it was like when we met
  • Jealousy, and why it’s not helpful
  • Her advice for bio moms
  • Lessons she learned over the years
  • Some listener questions
  • Her career

Ami is an inspiring woman and a true example of what it should look like to be a bio mom in a blended family. My hope is that her story (and ours together) helps to inspire others to create a peaceful family.

Abuse can be very damaging to a blended family, because there are more lives at stake. Instead of worrying about one family, we now have two we have to be concerned about. There are different types of abuse, which are physical, emotional, verbal, and sexual.

There are many factors that determine why people become abusers, and why others become victims. Getting help is essential in order to live a happy peaceful life, and to ensure that your kids live a happy life as well.

Back in September we did the perspective series, a month long series focusing on the perspective of people in the blended family. However, we never took into account the perspective of a child in the blended family home. Oftentimes we overlook a child’s feelings because we are too busy worrying about our own relationship and situation. Some common feelings a child may experience while being part of a divorce or a blended family are

  • Feeling like a divorce is their fault
  • Wanting to know what really happened (why did my parents get divorced?)
  • Wondering why their parent is acting different
  • Wondering or hoping their parents will get back together
  • Feeling like they will be replaced by their new stepparent or step siblings
  • Struggling with feelings of not liking their new stepparent or step siblings
  • Feeling like they are not getting enough attention
  • Feeling like they don't have a say in anything that is happening in their life

It’s essential to be supportive to you partner in any relationship, but it’s needed even more in a blended family. There are four key areas where support is important, which are parenting, work, lifestyle, and personal development.

Parenting

Always backup your partner and be their teammate

Support them emotionally through painful parenting moments

Help with general parenting responsibilities

Work and business life

Get interested in your partner's work

Be emotionally supportive if they’ve had a tough day

Be supportive of work relationships

Lifestyle

Encourage and support activities or hobbies that bring your partner joy

Be supportive of outside friendships

Don’t get jealous of their friends

Personal Growth

Encourage them when they succeed

Help to hold them accountable

Don’t  point out their failures

Don’t try to derail them

Aside from this, it’s also a good idea to be a supportive stepparent and a supportive co parent to the ex, or other bio parent.

Many adolescents struggle with their sexual identity.  If they identify as bisexual, lesbian, gay, or transexual, it can be much easier for them if they come from a home that is sex positive.

Blended families can be harder for a child to reveal their sexual identity to, as there are more people involved, each whom may have a differing opinion. It’s important for the entire family to come together and support the child in the coming out process.

Do you have a home that is sex positive? Do you even know what that means? Raising children comes with lots of questions, especially when it comes to sex. How much are we supposed to say? Should we tell the truth? We are living in quite a different world now than when we were young. Homes that are blended have a bit more of a challenge, as both sides need to decide what is right for their family. There are many benefits to being a sex positive parent, and many ways in which you can achieve it!

Jealousy is a normal human emotion, but sometimes it can interfere with our relationships. It is very common in the blended family to struggle with feelings of jealousy when it comes to your partner's ex spouse or their children. Some common types of jealousy blended families face are

  • jealousy of the partner's ex spouse and their history together
  • jealousy of the partner's ex spouse and their current relationship as co parents
  • jealousy of spouse and their relationship with their children
  • jealousy of spouse and the time they spend with their children
  • jealousy of spouse life outside of the family, including friends and work
  • overall jealousy of spouse regarding trust

In this episode I break those down for you in hopes to help you overcome them.

There are also 5 helpful tips to remember when trying to overcome jealousy

  1. trust and believe in your partner
  2. understand that jealousy comes from within
  3. don’t compare yourself to others
  4. stop the endless stories in your mind
  5. communicate
