Most divorced couples lack great communication skills, which makes co parenting much harder than it needs to be. Healthy communication with your ex creates a peaceful environment for your children, and also sets a great example for them that they will model when they grow up.

My 15 tips for better communication with your ex are

  1. Never use the kids as a go between
  2. Never argue in front of the kids
  3. Learn to pick and choose your battles
  4. Avoid being sarcastic, disrespectful, and rude
  5. Set boundaries, and stick to them
  6. Don't bring up the past when communicating
  7. Practice empathy
  8. Treat your ex the way you want to be treated
  9. Put your children first
  10. Texting and email should be your chosen method of communication
  11. Choose your words carefully
  12. Monitor your tone
  13. Avoid topics that will trigger your ex
  14. Learn to listen
  15. Learn to compromise

Our children get enough negativity in the outside world. At home, we need to counteract that by building them up. A healthy self esteem is so important for children to have, and it is our job as parents to help them have a positive self image. We can change their story, and teach them how to change their own. Some ideas to help are

  • Notice when they do something right
  • Tell them you are proud of them
  • Compliment them every day
  • Tell them they are beautiful

Rachel Grant is the owner and founder of Rachel Grant Coaching and is a Sexual Abuse Recovery Coach. She is also the author of Beyond Surviving: The Final Stage in Recovery from Sexual Abuse. She works with survivors of childhood sexual abuse who are beyond sick and tired of feeling broken, unfixable, and burdened by the past. She helps them let go of the pain of abuse and finally feel normal.

Her program, Beyond Surviving, has been specifically designed to change the way we think about and heal from abuse. Based on her educational training, study of neuroscience, and lessons learned from her own journey, she has successfully used this program since 2007 to help her clients break free from the past and move on with their lives.

Rachel holds an M.A. in Counseling Psychology. She provides a compassionate and challenging approach for her clients while using coaching as opposed to therapeutic models. She is also a member of San Francisco Coaches and Survivor Force CSA.

In this interview, we discuss

  • Her personal story
  • Why people don't seek help
  • What impact a survivor's abuse can have on their blended family
  • Her program, book, and podcast
  • Signs to look for to determine if our own child is being abused
  • And much more!
